الملخص

The study was conducted in the Nile River State (RNS) in Berber Locality during the winter
season 2016/17 to evaluate and compare the economic efficiency of traditional and modern
irrigation systems for alfalfa crop production. The study selected Alkafaa Scheme (Al-Rajhi)
where it uses sprinkler irrigation, Al-Hassa Agricultural Scheme and Small Private Schemes
where traditional irrigation is used. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, data was
collected through two questionnaires one for Small Private Schemes farmers, the other
questionnaire to collect the data from Alkafaa Scheme (investment) and Al- Hassa Scheme
(Public). In addition to the secondary data collected from the relevant authorities. This study
used, regression analysis و analysis of the farm budget and analysis of the two programs
(Cropwat8 and Climwat) for alfalfa crop. The study showed that Alkafaa Scheme is the
highest profitability for alfalfa crop compared to Al- Hassa Scheme and small private schemes
where the Coefficient of Private Profitability of alfalfa crop for the above schemes was (1.29,
1.23, 1.28) respectively. The results of regression analysis showed that the variables
(irrigation costs, seeds costs, fertilizer costs, pesticide costs) had a significant effect on alfalfa
productivity for the farmers of small private schemes, whereas variables (farmers age,
educational level, years of experience) did not have a significant effect on productivity for
small private farmers. The results analysis of the two programs (Cropwat8 and Climwat)
showed that the efficiency of using irrigation water for alfalfa crop was (70%, 47%, 47%) in
Alkafaa Scheme, Al- Hassa Scheme and small private schemes respectively. This confirms
that the use of modern irrigation increases the efficiency of water use. The study
recommended: encouraging of investment in the modern irrigation schemes, especially that
the results of the study reflects high efficiency compared to traditional irrigation. It also
recommended providing the necessary funding for alfalfa crop production in a timely manner
and sufficient to allow the use of agricultural inputs, the results of which showed a significant
positive impact on alfalfa production.
